She is the daughter of a francophone African literature professor and a nurse and completed her MFA at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, University of Iowa. Homegoing and Transcendent Kingdom, both by Yaa Gyasi, are two books that I count as contemporary masterpieces which I’ve been given the privilege of reading.
